Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
